In March of 2004 my father, David, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was given only a year to live. In an instant, my entire life was turned upside down. I was facing the all-consuming task of taking care of a sick father while accepting the harsh reality that the rest of my life wasn’t going to stop in the meantime. Learning to find that balance was one of the greatest, and most important, challenges I’ve ever faced.
My father was my best friend and the patriarch of the Isenberg clan. We dealt with excruciating lows but also experienced some incredible highs, which helped all of us to not only survive, but to thrive during the hardest struggle of our lives. The most important lesson I learned during that time was that no matter what life throws at you, you must learn to focus on the positives. Learning that lesson and others drove me to write The Longest Year and create this website so that I could share them with others who will go down the same difficult path.
